Yes
When someone asks to interview you. When you're asked to write a blog post, give a presentation, moderate a workshop, dance on the table in your bloomers. Say yes! Well, maybe not that last one, but you get the idea. When you are getting started and working to build those crucial 1000 true fans, there is no event or blog too small for your time.
Many authors will say that this takes away too much time from their writing. To this I say, "Hogwash". I realize that everyone's time is tight and we have to prioritize. But I also realize that most of us waste more time that we claim to have. Let's be honest, the amount of time it takes to write a decent guest post is an hour, maybe two tops. Are you telling me you don't fart away an hour each day checking Twitter, watching TV, or playing Candy Crush Saga?
The point here is that marketing doesn't need to cut into your writing time if you let it cut into you slacker time. I'm not suggesting you aren't allowed to have down time. I am suggesting that your down time should be the smallest slice of your day's pie chart when you are working to grow a small business (and as an author, you are your own small business).
When you reach the point where taking on another interview exceeds your limited down time and now begins to creep into your writing time, that's when you say no. Chances are, when that happens its because you've reached a level of popularity that everyone wants a piece of the action. That's when you are allowed to start being choosy about which interviews to grant and which conferences to attend.
Until then, say yes!
This is great advice! I know I waste more time than I should.
ReplyDeleteHappy Blitz Day!
Excellent blog post. You make a fantastic point.
ReplyDeleteStopping by from the #atozchallenge ! Also, happy Blitz day!
@JLenniDorner
Last year I turned off facebook for a month, and it reminded me how much of a time sucker it is. I get so much more done writing, crafting, even housework when I don't let the down time take over my life! Happy blitz day!!

Yes, I totally agree.
ReplyDeleteMarketing is top priority. No sense spending time writing if you don's spend time getting your work to be noticed.
Happy Blitz Day!
DeleteThat has just answered a question I was asking myself this very morning. Thank you. Excellent timing.
ReplyDeleteWow! This is awesome advise! I need to go back and read your A thru X advise!! Happy Blitz day!!
ReplyDeleteI love your theme! I'll have to go back and read through the posts.
ReplyDeleteI always say yes! It's very important.
Happy Blitz Day!
Every little bit counts when you're trying to build your readership. I think one of the toughest things about marketing a book is the awkwardness of self-promotion, so if someone hands you an invitation to share about your writing, it only makes sense to take advantage of the opportunity. Thanks for sharing this great advice! Hope you have a lovely Blitz Day!
ReplyDeleteGreat advice as always, Sarah. And how fun is it that I get to blitz my agent? :) You deserve the blitzing for all you do for authors.
ReplyDeleteAnd that is why I'm back blogging. This entire series has been pure gold and I commend you for what you've provided us aspiring writers.
ReplyDeleteWhich is why...you're being BLITZED! :)
Looking forward to meeting you this weekend!
Excellent advice! Happy blitz day! :)
ReplyDeleteIt's rare I will say no. There is a way to juggle it all if you really want it.
ReplyDeleteHappy Blitz Day!
HAPPY Blog Blitz. Indeed Yes is the answer. And I'm guilty of lots of slacker time I should slash. Good post
ReplyDeleteHappy blitz day!
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more. If I I'm busy with school and have to choose between blogging and writing, I choose writing. But I work to keep up with my blogger friends and try to post at least once every 2 weeks. Social media is an important part of being a writer now. I know I could do even better.
ReplyDeleteHappy Blitz Day!
LOL. I wish I had slacker time. I really do. No addictive games, no TV watching, and the only time spent on Twitter, facebook or blogging is scheduled. I guess that's what I get for home schooling, keeping up a music composition career and a writing career, eh? And I do say yes. I just have to calendar things out. It can be done. =)
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you and HAPPY BLITZ DAY!

Happy Blitz Day Sarah! I've discovered you through DL's Blitz initiative, and I'm glad that I did.
ReplyDeleteI always take a lot of time to think over whether to accept and take on something else or not, I think I'm still stuck in the 'I'm still so new to this' mentality. I'm trying to move forward with more confidence, and out of the newbie stage into the, 'yes, this is what I'm doing!' stage.
This series has been outstanding! You're an all around wonderful person and friend.
ReplyDeleteHappy Blitzer Day!!
The point here is that marketing doesn't need to cut into your writing time if you let it cut into you slacker time.
ReplyDeleteThis is definitely the key.
And happy Blitz Day!
Saying yes is a good thing. But sometimes, SOMEtimes, a person has to also be able to say no. HAPPY BLITZ DAY!
ReplyDeleteEven if the opportunity doesn't seem worth it, I've found it often leads to another opportunity that is even better.
ReplyDeleteHappy Blitz day!
Enjoyable blog post, Sarah, and such a simple but true point to emphasize. Nicely done.
ReplyDeleteHappy Blitz Day
This is such an excellent point - "...marketing doesn't need to cut into your writing time if you let it cut into you slacker time."
ReplyDeleteStopping by from the Blitz and A-Z! :)
Yes! And I ditto what Diane said---sometimes when I've agreed to something just to be nice, it ends up leading to something even better. I'm so happy DL made me aware of your series. Must come back to read A through Z real soon!
ReplyDeleteGreat article. Happy Blitz Day!
ReplyDeleteVery nice information, I'm going to have to go back and read the others as well.
ReplyDeleteHappy Blitz Day!
Someone actually asked me for a free copy of my book yesterday, in exchange for a fair review and my first reaction was BUY IT! Then I thought, I could use more reviews, so I said YES!! YES! YESSSS!!!!
ReplyDeleteHappy Blitz Day! :)
I never turn down a chance to write a post as a guest blogger! Have a great Blitz Day!
ReplyDeleteExcellent advice! I have been working hard on social media promoting. With hopes it will positively impact my online presence.
ReplyDeleteIt is really easy to get sucked into doing things that don't benefit your goals (Web surfing, playing games).
Happy Blitz Day!
Thanks for the advice! I've just got a small blog right now, but I'm hoping to grow my readers through several social media outlets. Nobody's asking me yet (for anything), but my response will be YES! Happy Blitz Day! Cheers, marci at fuzzyundertones.com :o)
ReplyDeleteHappy Blitz Day! As relatively new author, I'm loving the tips... And even though I've spent my parenting years
ReplyDeleteperfecting the art of the NO (not to mention hard time as an HR exec, which I think should be measured like dog years, only then I'd be older than Noah or maybe even Betty White...), I promise to say yes at every opportunity. Except for maybe the bloomer dancing. I just have one question: who spilled about my Candy Crush habit?
Excellent advice. Happy Blitz Day.
ReplyDeleteGreat advice! I'm preparing for a blog tour now and have been writing so many guest blogs and answering so many interview questions, I'm starting to go batty! I'm thrilled that so many people are willing to feature me on their blogs.
ReplyDeleteHappy blitz day, Sarah!
Very good advice. Stopping by to wish you a Happy Blitz Day!
ReplyDeleteSaying yes to marketing is definitely sound advice!
ReplyDeleteCongrats in advance for finishing the A to Z challenge (yay for us!) and happy blitz day! :)
I'm bookmarking all of your A-Z posts. Great Advice.
ReplyDeleteHappy Blitz Day :)
The more exposure the better. Great advice.

ReplyDeleteGreat advice! Happy Blitz day!
ReplyDeleteYes is a wonderful word...and yes I've danced on the table too ;-) Happy Blitz Day!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDelete...Happy Blitz Blog day, m’Lady :)
ReplyDeleteSo glad you were selected for the Blitz today, Sarah. Your blog is a real find. Great post. So right, we are masters of our time through the choices we make. We should be should say yes to offers that are steps toward our goals. Thanks for the encouragement to be open to opportunities large and small. Enjoy. Maria, Delight Directed Living

Guest blogging is something that I have to explore. Great advice. :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Blitz Day :)
Happy Blitz Day, Sarah! I agree... expanding your reach is so easy to do and worthwhile. You never know what doors just might open.
ReplyDeleteI've been encouraging this sort of thing in my series on promotion as well. So many have commented about being scared, but most will get over their fears once they've gotten out there and gained more experience. Especially the personal presentations can afford a more effective one on one experience where more people will want to buy your books and often a speaking gig offers an opportunity to sell and sign books and establish a personal relationship with those with whom you come into contact.
ReplyDeleteSay "Yes"-- I'm with you on that!

You're right about slacking off time... Guilty! hjblenkinsop.co.uk
ReplyDeleteI feel the guilt of seeing the light of truth in this. I could say yes more than I do. Happy Blitz day to you.
ReplyDeleteAgree with you about having your marketing time cut into your slacking off time, rather than your writing. No slacking this month and that's the truth. Happy Blitz day to you.
ReplyDeleteHi. This is my first time here, courtesy of DL's blog blitz, but it won't be my last. I'm coming back to read all your A-Z posts. Looks like good stuff.
ReplyDeleteHappy Blitz Day.
Great advice!
ReplyDeleteHappy Blitz Day=)
This is awesome advice! I haven't been here before either, but I'm definitely coming back. :)

ReplyDeleteHappy Blog Blitz Day!
happy blitz day! good advice! :)
ReplyDeleteOh, you know me so well...I definitely can fritter away time online that would be much better used elsewhere. HAPPY BLITZ DAY!
ReplyDeleteSupply and demand. Very true. Putting ourselves out there initially is all part of the ride, right? Thanks for the tips.
ReplyDeleteI think the Universe is sending me a message. I wrote today about saying yes. I probably need to listen to both my own and your advice! I hope you enjoy the Blitz. I'll be back.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on your Blitz - great advice!
ReplyDeleteI have so enjoyed all your posts this month! This is great advice about not letting slacker time get in the way of what's important. Happy Blitz Day!
ReplyDeleteGreat advice! Happy blitz day!

I completely agree. It is easy to waste time on the computer. Happy Blitz Day!
ReplyDeleteA very interesting post, though I have some mixed thoughts about it. Yes, there are those who spend countless hours of wasted time, and they could probably gain a lot from re-prioritizing their time. There are some people, however, who do work really hard and don't end up with a lot of spare time. They have to squeeze in the extra hour or two, just to make it work for them. While it's not advisable to be a snob or be too picky, I still say pick and choose if you need to. Happy Blitz Day to you.

Reposting this line on twitter: Marketing doesn't need to cut into your writing time if you let it cut into you slacker time.
ReplyDeleteSo true! :) Oh, and you may want to fix that missing R on "you."
You've been blitzed!
Great advice. I've heard a lot of talk about learning to say no, but I guess there are a lot of opportunities where we need to learn to say yes as well and find a happy medium between the two. Especially for those of us who have a lot of responsibilities outside of writing, it's important to remember not to say yes if you really won't have time to follow through. Then, it's a matter of tarnishing your reputation by taking on obligations that you can't keep up with. I have yet to say no to a guest post or interview, but I say this because I work 2 jobs and attend grad school in addition to writing--finding any down time can be hard enough,
ReplyDeleteHi, Sarah! Good advice here. I'll have to check out the rest of these marketing posts. Great idea for a theme!
ReplyDeleteHappy Blitz Day!!
Happy A to Z-ing! from Laura Marcella @ Wavy Lines
Happy blitz day and also second to last A-Z day lol.
ReplyDeleteBrandon Ax: Writer's Storm
Yep, I should cut back on the down time. I love procrastination though, lol. Good advice Sarah.
ReplyDeleteI say a gigantic YES to your yes. You never know where you might pick up a reader or a friend if you help out someone else with their blog or event. Happy blitz day.
ReplyDeleteMy down time is my writing time, so I have to choose whether to promote or to write. Which is fine. It's just a matter of prioritizing day to day so both get done.
ReplyDeleteHappy blitz day!
I'm a firm believer in saying yes. That being said, I often overbook myself and run myself ragged...sigh. I'm glad I found you through DL's Blitz crew. Looking forward to coming back and reading your whole series. I might actually have time now that the A-Z is wrapping up. I love co-hosting though, so not complaining!

"Marketing doesn't need to cut into your writing time if you let it cut into you slacker time." <--Truer words have never been spoken. I think it's just hard for writers to prioritize. We need some release time to keep the creative juices flowing, but more and more things are demanding our time. It's all about balance!
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your candid advice! Makes me want to tighten up my downtime reins.
ReplyDeleteExcellent article! Happy Blitz Day!
ReplyDeleteThis is great advice! I know that I spend far too much time in slacker time and too little involved in productive time. Happy Blitz Day!
ReplyDeleteYes, this is so true. If most people would simply cut their TV and/or online time in half, it would help immensely.
ReplyDeleteExcellent advice! I definitely need to have a chit-chat with my slacker side :-) Happy Blitz!
ReplyDeleteGreat tips! Happy blitz day
ReplyDeleteWait...so I shouldn't dance on the table in my bloomers? Man, I wish I'd read this post this morning...
ReplyDeleteHello from the Blitz!
Wow, I agree, Sarah. I never turn down anything except my collar. I've had people say to me, "Only two people follow my blog and one's my mom" and I said, "Then I'll write it for you and your mom."
ReplyDeleteThis is such great advice! Am definitely still working on building that fan base, but can already feel myself pulled in so many directions. I think next school year I'll be doing some re-prioritizing...
ReplyDeleteHappy Blitz Day!
Geez, I sure wish I were looking for an agent, because judging by your voice, I think we'd get along just dandy. In reading through some of your A-Z posts, you sure have offered a lot of valuable information. Thanks!
ReplyDelete(ahem) But I digree.
You feeling woozy? You should, because you, my dear, are getting BLITZED! Enjoy!
So pleased to have been pointed in the direction of your blog, some great advice.
ReplyDeleteHappy Blitz Day!
Say YES to a Blitz!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the tip - it's great advice. I would be nervous about a workshop or presentation - but at the same time I do it for work. :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Blitz Day!
Whenever you're presented with an opportunity to get your name and work out there the answer should always be "yes". :) Great post!
ReplyDeleteAnd Happy Blitz Day!!! :D
But . . . I LOVE my slacker time. :) Wise words, however, and ones we usually want to ignore. Glad we had the blitz here, because your posts have been very helpful to read! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteExcellent advice, Sarah. And although I did say no to the A-to-Z this year, I didn't say no to the Bliz.
ReplyDeleteHappy Blitz Day!

So love blogging even though it takes time. Glad to see you value it in a time some say blogs are dying. And so glad to have found your blog. Happy Blitz Day!
ReplyDeleteGreat post, and like others above, I will have to come back at the end of the A to Z (which is tomorrow, dah!) and read through the previous days offerings. Well anyhoo, Happy Penultimate A to Z day, and an equally Happy Blitz Day! :)
ReplyDeleteBlogging is amazing for writers when they devote the needed time consistently. Happy blitz!
ReplyDeleteHAPPY BLITZ DAY!!!
ReplyDeleteHappy to find all these great tips on your website via a Blitz stop. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteGreat tips! Happy Blitz Day
ReplyDeleteYes, yes and yes! I recently joined a blog hop, my (gulp) first, and in quick succession received two offers to guest post on other blogs. I'm on the umpteenth edit of my first book before I submit to a professional editor, and just finished writing the sequel, so for a pre-published author (hey, I like that term!), these are amazing opportunities to meet and be exposed to new people. What a timely post--just in time for Happy Blitz Day!
ReplyDeleteFantastic advice. Thanks so much for sharing it. By the way, Happy Blog Blitz Day to you. I hope you enjoy it to the fullest! Eva
ReplyDeleteExcellent advice. Looks like I need to bookmark your site and go through your whole series. Glad DL chose your site to blitz!
ReplyDeleteSuper ideas. I'm going to bookmark your site and return soon to catch your other posts. Happy blitz day!
ReplyDeleteGood ideas! Going to go back and read the rest of them! Happy blitz day!
ReplyDeleteGreat advice! I'm participating in A to Z too. I'll have to check out your other posts. Happy Blitz Day!
ReplyDeleteWonderful advice! Like Melissa, I too will have to go read all your other posts now. Happy Blitz Day!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with your advice :) and I'm so grateful there are so many authors out there, helping each other out.
ReplyDeleteHappy Blitz Day
These are great ideas. I agree completely that we all have more free hours than we realize or admit. Ironically, the busier we are, the better we manage those same hours. Happy blitz day!
ReplyDeleteGreat tips this month! Happy Blitz Day! :)
ReplyDeleteMaking the most of the time you have; Great Advice. Oh, the excuses we make.
ReplyDeleteNice to meet you. Happy Blitz Day!
Great advice! Also, Happy Blitz Day!! I hope it's been a fabulous day! :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Blitz Day! Yes I'm late.
ReplyDeleteSorry I'm late to the Blitz party! I've been on a blogging break and have been a little out of the loop. Yikes! But yes, I've done a couple guest posts and had a lot of fun with them. Great advice all around and glad to meet you. Have a good one. :)
ReplyDeleteHappy Belated Blitz! Sorry I'm late. =/ I've been enjoying your A-Z, you always make marketing fun and your ideas aren't the old same hum-drum, but exciting!
ReplyDeleteHappy Blitz Day!!!
ReplyDeleteExcellent post. Unfortunately, I don't have the problem of people vying for my attention so I am quite the blog tramp...if you ask I will come, though always with my bloomers on- I'm not that big of a tramp!
I'm late to the party (as usual...) but I didn't want to let pass the opportunity to 1) poke around in your blog, and 2) wish you a HAPPY BLITZ DAY! And congrats on finishing the A-to-Z; this year's was particularly grueling for me, hope it wasn't for you.
