Blogging from A to Z: Yes

Blogging from A to Z is a month long challenge to post every day of the month (excluding Sunday) using a different letter of alphabet. This month I'm sharing unusual book marketing tips as part of my Marketing From The Edge Series.
Yes

When someone asks to interview you. When you're asked to write a blog post, give a presentation, moderate a workshop, dance on the table in your bloomers. Say yes! Well, maybe not that last one, but you get the idea. When you are getting started and working to build those crucial 1000 true fans, there is no event or blog too small for your time.

Many authors will say that this takes away too much time from their writing. To this I say, "Hogwash". I realize that everyone's time is tight and we have to prioritize. But I also realize that most of us waste more time that we claim to have. Let's be honest, the amount of time it takes to write a decent guest post is an hour, maybe two tops. Are you telling me you don't fart away an hour each day checking Twitter, watching TV, or playing Candy Crush Saga?

The point here is that marketing doesn't need to cut into your writing time if you let it cut into you slacker time. I'm not suggesting you aren't allowed to have down time. I am suggesting that your down time should be the smallest slice of your day's pie chart when you are working to grow a small business (and as an author, you are your own small business).

When you reach the point where taking on another interview exceeds your limited down time and now begins to creep into your writing time, that's when you say no. Chances are, when that happens its because you've reached a level of popularity that everyone wants a piece of the action. That's when you are allowed to start being choosy about which interviews to grant and which conferences to attend.

Until then, say yes!

  3. Last year I turned off facebook for a month, and it reminded me how much of a time sucker it is. I get so much more done writing, crafting, even housework when I don't let the down time take over my life! Happy blitz day!!

  4. Yes, I totally agree.
Marketing is top priority. No sense spending time writing if you don's spend time getting your work to be noticed.

  5. That has just answered a question I was asking myself this very morning. Thank you. Excellent timing.

  6. Wow! This is awesome advise! I need to go back and read your A thru X advise!! Happy Blitz day!!

  7. I love your theme! I'll have to go back and read through the posts.

I always say yes! It's very important.

    Happy Blitz Day!

  8. Every little bit counts when you're trying to build your readership. I think one of the toughest things about marketing a book is the awkwardness of self-promotion, so if someone hands you an invitation to share about your writing, it only makes sense to take advantage of the opportunity. Thanks for sharing this great advice! Hope you have a lovely Blitz Day!

  9. Great advice as always, Sarah. And how fun is it that I get to blitz my agent? :) You deserve the blitzing for all you do for authors.

  10. And that is why I'm back blogging. This entire series has been pure gold and I commend you for what you've provided us aspiring writers.

Which is why...you're being BLITZED! :)

Looking forward to meeting you this weekend!

  12. It's rare I will say no. There is a way to juggle it all if you really want it.
    Happy Blitz Day!

  13. HAPPY Blog Blitz. Indeed Yes is the answer. And I'm guilty of lots of slacker time I should slash. Good post

  14. I couldn't agree more. If I I'm busy with school and have to choose between blogging and writing, I choose writing. But I work to keep up with my blogger friends and try to post at least once every 2 weeks. Social media is an important part of being a writer now. I know I could do even better.

    Happy Blitz Day!

  15. LOL. I wish I had slacker time. I really do. No addictive games, no TV watching, and the only time spent on Twitter, facebook or blogging is scheduled. I guess that's what I get for home schooling, keeping up a music composition career and a writing career, eh? And I do say yes. I just have to calendar things out. It can be done. =)

Nice to meet you and HAPPY BLITZ DAY!

  19. Happy Blitz Day Sarah! I've discovered you through DL's Blitz initiative, and I'm glad that I did.

I always take a lot of time to think over whether to accept and take on something else or not, I think I'm still stuck in the 'I'm still so new to this' mentality. I'm trying to move forward with more confidence, and out of the newbie stage into the, 'yes, this is what I'm doing!' stage.

  20. This series has been outstanding! You're an all around wonderful person and friend.
    Happy Blitzer Day!!

  21. The point here is that marketing doesn't need to cut into your writing time if you let it cut into you slacker time.

    This is definitely the key.

    And happy Blitz Day!

  22. Saying yes is a good thing. But sometimes, SOMEtimes, a person has to also be able to say no. HAPPY BLITZ DAY!

  23. Even if the opportunity doesn't seem worth it, I've found it often leads to another opportunity that is even better.

  26. Yes! And I ditto what Diane said---sometimes when I've agreed to something just to be nice, it ends up leading to something even better. I'm so happy DL made me aware of your series. Must come back to read A through Z real soon!

  28. Someone actually asked me for a free copy of my book yesterday, in exchange for a fair review and my first reaction was BUY IT! Then I thought, I could use more reviews, so I said YES!! YES! YESSSS!!!!

  30. Excellent advice! I have been working hard on social media promoting. With hopes it will positively impact my online presence.

It is really easy to get sucked into doing things that don't benefit your goals (Web surfing, playing games).

    Happy Blitz Day!

  31. Thanks for the advice! I've just got a small blog right now, but I'm hoping to grow my readers through several social media outlets. Nobody's asking me yet (for anything), but my response will be YES! Happy Blitz Day! Cheers, marci at fuzzyundertones.com :o)

  32. Happy Blitz Day! As relatively new author, I'm loving the tips... And even though I've spent my parenting years
perfecting the art of the NO (not to mention hard time as an HR exec, which I think should be measured like dog years, only then I'd be older than Noah or maybe even Betty White...), I promise to say yes at every opportunity. Except for maybe the bloomer dancing. I just have one question: who spilled about my Candy Crush habit?

  49. I've been encouraging this sort of thing in my series on promotion as well. So many have commented about being scared, but most will get over their fears once they've gotten out there and gained more experience. Especially the personal presentations can afford a more effective one on one experience where more people will want to buy your books and often a speaking gig offers an opportunity to sell and sign books and establish a personal relationship with those with whom you come into contact.

Say "Yes"-- I'm with you on that!

    ReplyDelete
  67. A very interesting post, though I have some mixed thoughts about it. Yes, there are those who spend countless hours of wasted time, and they could probably gain a lot from re-prioritizing their time. There are some people, however, who do work really hard and don't end up with a lot of spare time. They have to squeeze in the extra hour or two, just to make it work for them. While it's not advisable to be a snob or be too picky, I still say pick and choose if you need to. Happy Blitz Day to you.

  68. Reposting this line on twitter: Marketing doesn't need to cut into your writing time if you let it cut into you slacker time.

So true! :) Oh, and you may want to fix that missing R on "you."

    You've been blitzed!

    ReplyDelete
  69. Great advice. I've heard a lot of talk about learning to say no, but I guess there are a lot of opportunities where we need to learn to say yes as well and find a happy medium between the two. Especially for those of us who have a lot of responsibilities outside of writing, it's important to remember not to say yes if you really won't have time to follow through. Then, it's a matter of tarnishing your reputation by taking on obligations that you can't keep up with. I have yet to say no to a guest post or interview, but I say this because I work 2 jobs and attend grad school in addition to writing--finding any down time can be hard enough,

    ReplyDelete

  73. I say a gigantic YES to your yes. You never know where you might pick up a reader or a friend if you help out someone else with their blog or event. Happy blitz day.

    ReplyDelete
  74. My down time is my writing time, so I have to choose whether to promote or to write. Which is fine. It's just a matter of prioritizing day to day so both get done.

    Happy blitz day!

  75. I'm a firm believer in saying yes. That being said, I often overbook myself and run myself ragged...sigh. I'm glad I found you through DL's Blitz crew. 76. "Marketing doesn't need to cut into your writing time if you let it cut into you slacker time." <--Truer words have never been spoken. I think it's just hard for writers to prioritize. We need some release time to keep the creative juices flowing, but more and more things are demanding our time. It's all about balance!

    ReplyDelete

  83. Wow, I agree, Sarah. I never turn down anything except my collar. I've had people say to me, "Only two people follow my blog and one's my mom" and I said, "Then I'll write it for you and your mom."

    ReplyDelete
  84. This is such great advice! Am definitely still working on building that fan base, but can already feel myself pulled in so many directions. I think next school year I'll be doing some re-prioritizing...

  95. Yes, yes and yes! I recently joined a blog hop, my (gulp) first, and in quick succession received two offers to guest post on other blogs. I'm on the umpteenth edit of my first book before I submit to a professional editor, and just finished writing the sequel, so for a pre-published author (hey, I like that term!), these are amazing opportunities to meet and be exposed to new people.
